Beginner’s division

To introduce debating to students who have not done it before and to give them a chance to compete, we have added the beginner’s division to the competition.

  • Beginners will have longer preparation time (60 minutes) for the impromptu round, and will be given materials/resources relating to the motion. There will also be two prepared motions, with sides allocated to teams two weeks in advance.
    • Prepared motions are:
      • (1) This house believes that students should have a say in what they wish to learn;
      • (2) This house regrets the UN’s effort to reduce world poverty
  • Debaters will be expected to give short speeches: 3-minute speeches and 1.5-minute replies. However, there will be no protected time, and POIs can be offered through the 3-minute speeches.
  • Schools without a debate team can benefit from help to set one up.
